The sunlight beckoned to me. It coaxed me from the safe haven of my protective silk cocoon. I pushed my way through the tiny hole I was able to tear into my sturdy home. The golden light of the sun bathed me in the warmth that allowed Earthly life to prosper.
I felt like I was leaving behind that whom I did not want to be and had just been reborn as who I was meant to be. Another feeling of familiarity struck me while I made my way into the light of my new life.
I crawled onto the outside of what was my cradle for what seemed like ages. I felt damp, but the heat of the fiery ball in the sky was bringing fresh life to my new body and old soul. I rested in anticipation of what I knew to be the start of what I had been waiting for for so long.
The moment had finally come. I felt strong. I lifted my body up on my six skinny, hair-thin legs. I felt smaller. More agile. I hadn’t yet taken a step, but I felt more free already.
Something else was different. Something else made my new body feel so right. I felt a new extension of myself. Not just a new physical part of my body, but the resolved feeling of longing that came with it. I knew this is why I had been through what I had and this is my reward for my patience.
I spread my shimmering wings.
With one strong beat, I shot into the air. With every additional beat, the scales of my wings burst in a spectrum of colors with every ray of sunlight that danced across my beautiful new body.
I drifted on the breeze, gliding almost effortlessly with an occasional beat of my large, sparkling wings. I sailed across the calm air like a ship on a steady sea. I felt free. The white fluffy clouds overhead gave the deep blue sky some character while I danced across a field of flowers.
I went on to travel the breeze and explore many different flowers. I enjoyed every moment of my life as a butterfly. And when my time came... I was happy that I was blessed with such a beautiful existence. I was happy to move on and make room for the next butterfly to enjoy the same experience.
So I settled on the most beautiful rose I could find. I felt tired, so I rested. I took in the taste and smell of the rose petals, the cool breeze flowing over the field, and the peace of mind that life was good to me.
With my last gaze of that life, I saw a flicker of light glisten off of a golden object hanging from a thorn on my rose. It felt familiar, but I closed my eyes, and went to sleep. The End...? By Devin Gaughan
